Notes for our Journey Through Genesis
As Christians, we often spend the majority of our time studying the later chapters of the story of God. They are good and we should immerse ourselves in them, but we'll miss incredible amounts of details if we don’t continually keep in mind the beginning of the story as we do so. The more we saturate ourselves in the beginning of the story, the more the rest of the Bible comes alive, and the better we understand our place in the story of God as well.
Nothing We Can Do
I was inspired to write this song after I got the news that a friend/mentor of mine had just disqualified himself from ministry. I was heartbroken. This was the second worship leader (that I looked up to) that had fallen into sexual immorality within the past 4 years. I was struck with fear and doubts about my own faith and standing with God. How could I succeed in ministry, or even in living a faithful life of worshipping God, if those men couldn’t?
Taking God at His Word
In Matthew 5:33-37, Jesus calls his disciples to be people of their word. “Let what you say be simply ‘yes’ or ‘no,’” Jesus says to those who have gathered around him for the Sermon on the Mount. There are no loop holes, no easy ways out. While we, like the pharisees before us, may be tempted to cheapen our word and suggest that there is a way out of doing what we’ve said, Jesus makes no such exception.
Fighting Against the Flesh
We live in an ever increasingly sexualized world. From television to TikTok to novels and children’s education, sex and sexualization has pervaded almost every facet of the western society. For a long time, this has been described as a man’s struggle, yet the reality is that both men and women struggle with lustful thoughts and desires. Both men and women are regularly enticed by sin into viewing pornography from early ages, watching questionable videos on TikTok, or spending their Saturday afternoons gawking down at the beach—yet we often shy away from being clear that this too is sin.
